Restaurant Good Friends @ Genting Highlands

DSC_9040
Imperial-themed with dragon motifs and Forbidden-City-inspired red doors, Restaurant Good Friends (好友记) in Genting Highlands serves a mix of Cantonese and Hakka cuisine fit for a king.

DSC_9017
For starters, the jelly fish paired with Japanese red octopus is a classic duo (RM 9.50), with added sweetness from crisp, raw onions slices.  The onion slices have been somehow treated to lose the pungency, and only left with “refreshing” sweetness – an adjective I would hardly use to describe onions.

DSC_9016
The following dishes are all Hakka dishes which are distinctive and vibrant stir-fries. Japanese cucumbers are most commonly eaten raw in salads, but when cooked with minced pork, they have lost some of that vegetable rawness, yet still juicy, and especially intriguing with the use of olive vegetables (橄榄菜) (RM 18.50).

DSC_9031
The Long Bean & Eggplant stir-fry (RM 18.50) is another aromatic dish where I can imagine the wok is flaming in the process of cooking this dish, with the eggplant so soft it melts and they go perfectly well with the lightly-charred long beans.

DSC_9024
The tender pork with black fungus in clay pot (RM 32.50) is another delectable dish; elegant in its simplicity with the use of mere seasoning of ginger, rice wine and soy sauce that generated an intense flavor which seemed to have merged, yet every seasoning stood out in their own right.

DSC_9014
The restaurant’s interior has a dash of red and do check out the huge chopsticks hanging from the ceilings !

DSC_9039
If you just need to grab something quick, Restaurants Good Friends serves single-person dishes such as fried rice, chicken rice and wan tan mee.  The prices are already inclusive of service charge and tax.

DSC_9306
Peng Heong Hakka Pork Ribs Restaurant boasts of an almost 40 years of experience that entice patrons back and again for the time-tested recipe.  The famous pork ribs are deep fried and super tender.  Lightly coated with a starchy powder, they are also chewy with a sweet note which reminisces slightly of char siew.  The ribs are  already deboned and sliced into a convenient size.

DSC_9317
Claypot Asam Mustard is intense of appetite-whetting sourish flavors and it is a tad heavier than the usual mustard soups as this one is more of a gravy than soup.

Peng Heong Hakka Paikut Pork Ribs Restaurant @ Klang 4
Kampung fish are prepared not with the typical way of deep-frying, but steamed with a blanket of asam sauce which is a similar and lighter version of the claypot asam mustard above.

DSC_9307
These Hakka meatballs (RM 1 per piece) are deep-fried and not oily at all with an evenly-browned coating.  Despite being called meatballs, it’s not 100% meat but meat mixed with starchy material, so they may look heavy in protein, in fact, they are crisp with a fluffy filling.
DSC_9318
Pork and curry are not quite the common duo so for those that love this duo and are frustrated looking for it, Peng Heong has it as a viscous curry; although the meat could have been stewed a tad longer to tenderize it.

DSC_9313
Tofu with minced meat is a simple and delightful dish.

DSC_9303
Drink choices include soy bean and herbal tea in Johnie Walker bottles.

DSC_9323
Food here is extremely affordable.  Depending on the size of the dish, they range from RM 4 – RM 20 per dish; and the fish is market price.  It was RM 90 for the 6 dishes and 2 bottles of drinks; not bad at all for stuffing the 4 of us!

DSC_9514
Loong Hua seafood Restaurant (隆华海鲜酒家) would be an ideal place to eat if you have a big party because everything is ordered by the kg.  You could still eat there if you only have two people – the upside is, you are overloaded with the same good stuff, the downside is, you can only try two dishes and you will be maxed out.

DSC_9510
DSC_9509
The lightly battered crabs (RM 45) are coated with basic yet tantalizing mixture of salt and pepper with an abundant use of chopped spring onions.  This is 1 kg of crabs (about 4 pieces) and we wiped them clean.

DSC_9504
This is another 1 kg of clams (RM 17), steamed with ginger and just the right amount of rice wine.  The resulting stock from the mix of rice wine and clam essence is simply divine.

DSC_9495DSC_9503
This gigantic clam must be the restaurant’s mascot.  It’s at least 80 – 100 years old to be this size for 2 babies to fit in there.

DSC_9494
The restaurant is next to the fisherman’s wharf, so it actually has a bit of “sea smell” that you eventually acclimatize to.  You can always choose to sit at the inner portion with aircon.

Bagan Seafood Restaurant @ Sekinchan 4
Bagan Seafood Restaurant (鸿运海鲜饭店) seems to be a popular one at Sekinchan along the seafood street where about 10 restaurants compete.  At off peak hours of 3 – 4 pm, patrons were still flowing in yet somehow, our experience was just an average one.

We ordered three dishes – 1.  Razor clam in kam heong sauce (RM 17) is aromatic with curry-flavor but I think the clams were blanched in water first then stir fried with the sauce, making them a tad watery so the sauce didn’t adhere as strongly and felt slightly diluted.

Bagan Seafood Restaurant @ Sekinchan 5
2.  This “Half Way to Cook Fried Tongus Fish” (RM 14) as per menu is pretty much translated literally from its Chinese name – 半煎煮龙舌. The staff explained it’s a one sided fish also known as “slipper fish”  – so I am thinking it’s some kind of flounder, but about half the size than the ones that you would see in a Japanese restaurant.  This dish is well executed, where flounder pieces are fried till crisp and blanked with an appetizing fermented bean sauce while ginger and leeks enhanced the flavor.

Bagan Seafood Restaurant @ Sekinchan 3
The steamed prawns (RM 16) looked good immersed in solid egg white topped with ginger slices and deep-fried onion.  Unfortunately the prawns were not too fresh with an overpowering use of rice wine.

Bagan Seafood Restaurant @ Sekinchan 2Bagan Seafood Restaurant @ Sekinchan 1
The prawns could have been better.  But the three dishes only came up to RM 47 – not even RM 50 for seafood, so maybe this could be the reason that it’s popular.

Wheel Noodle @ TSG, Ipoh, Malaysia

DSC_0089
At Wheel Noodle that has just newly opened on Jalan Market, eating noodles may not be the same again when noodles are served in bite-sized portions, in old-fashioned bowls with rooster images.  In fact, Wheel Noodle is calling its noodles “Dong Dong Noodles”, as in the olden days, noodles are sold on bicycles with vendors making “dong dong” sounds by knocking metal spatula on the wok to attract more customers.

DSC_0086
The white umbrellas in mid air reminds me of a similar concept used in KL Performing Arts Centre (KLPAC);  except that Wheel Noodle uses white ones instead of multi-colored ones.  You won’t see this from the main road of Jalan Market, but on the “concubine lane” that’s parallel to the street.

DSC_0133 DSC_0126
It is the 1981 Guest House you would see on Jalan Market.  1981 Guest House’s Cafe is interconnected to Wheel Noodle that’s right behind it.

DSC_0121
You may sit at 1981’s cafe, or cut across to Wheel Noodle @TSG.  Whichever you choose to sit, same menu is offered (at the moment; not sure if 1981 cafe might venture out into a different menu).

DSC_0101DSC_0084
Wheel Noodle’s interior exudes a mood of the bygone days with the tiny wooden tables and it-could-not-be-any-simpler stools.

DSC_0110DSC_0119
At the same time it has a cheerful vibe with this wall of potted  flowers.  Flowers are plastic but joyful enough.

DSC_0112
You can read about Ah Lim and Dong Dong Noodles’ story on this wall.

DSC_0092
And now the noodles.  There are only two kinds to choose from, fish noodles and beef noodles (RM 1.90 per bowl).  Talk about downsizing the menu to help the patrons decide faster !

DSC_0097
The beef noodles are paired with “lai fun” (or laksa noodles) and immersed in a lightly sourish soup with salted vegetable, topped with bean sprouts, beef and beef meat ball.  Lai fun is good, texture of meat is variable with the one from the first bowl being a bit tougher than the one from the second.  Meat ball is a bit mushy and no surprising texture.

DSC_0098 The fish noodles are paired with “dong fun” (mung bean noodles), topped with fish ball, bean sprouts and youtiao in a peppery broth with “dong cai” (winter vegetables).  It’s a bit like “hor hee” actually.

DSC_0117
I ate four bowls of these noodles ! The portions are tiny;  I finished each bowl in two bites.  If I really tried, I could have gulped the whole thing in one bite.

DSC_0114
The portions are actually made intentionally small to see how many bowls you can eat.  Fun, but the workers are going to have a hell of a time washing the bowls if one person eats a minimum of 4 bowls !

DSC_0118
The concept is quite cute, eating noodles from a tiny bowl and competing with your friends or family to see who eats noodles from the most bowls.  The only thing though is that the noodles are a bit heavy on MSG and the beef and meat ball could have been better.

DSC_9552
Cha Po Tion Seafood Restaurant (阿娇海鲜饭店) is located on the main “Seafood Street” in Sekinchan, which we somehow completely missed when we drove along the street because it really just looks like a wooden hut with metal roofs and a fading-away sign board that’s hardly legible.  This restaurant would have been unfated had not been our running group’s suggestion. Be there early or be patient because they prepare food table by table.  It may take a while to be your turn, but once it’s your turn, food are dished out fast.

DSC_9524
First up is shark soup (RM 18), a merry party of springy shark slices, bouncy fish balls and tofu in salted vegetable soup slightly neutralized by tomatoes.

DSC_9557
Deep-fried calamari (RM 23) is of superb texture, where light batter coats thick, chewy calamari slices that burst with freshness from the sea.

DSC_9571
Fish is pan-fried to crisp, I mean thoroughly crisp on every inch you can find on the fish without any corners being burnt, and you can even hear it sizzle open when you sink your chopsticks into them.  With a drizzle of lime juice, it is simple yet sensational where the sour note enhances the freshness of the fish even more.

Cha Po Tion Seafood Restaurant @ Sekinchan 7
We can never have too much fish and we double up the joy with yet another fish dish (RM 22), where pan-fried slices with a crisp coat are smothered in fermented bean paste sauce.

DSC_9540
Steamed clams are my favorite anytime – steamed in simplicity without any rice wine in its own essence released in the process, topped with ginger slices and deep-fried onions.

DSC_9534
Simple fried bitter gourd with egg (RM 10).

DSC_9549
And lastly, to be honest – I don’t know what is this dish because it was kind of finished before I got to it, but I do know it’s RM 24.

DSC_9573 DSC_9575
The bill came up to RM 151, which is only RM 17 per person for the nine of us, totally worth it despite the 1 hour wait !

9 Things To Do in Sekinchan @ Malaysia

Paddy Processing Factory (PLS Marketing) @ Sekinchan 15
Sekinchan is a beach side village blessed with fertile soils where a sea of luxurious paddy field takes your breath away. Its name in Chinese 适耕莊 (pronounced “shi geng zhuang”) is translated directly from the phonetics of Sekinchan yet it couldn’t be more apt because it means “village suitable for farming”, stating out the beauty of Sekinchan with mere three words.  Sekinchan is indeed a land of abundance, eloquently  presented in their tag line – 鱼米之乡(pronounced “yu mi zhi xiang”),meaning “the land of fish and rice”.

Sekinchan is an easy 1.5 hours drive from KL and can be enjoyed as a day trip.  It would be a fruitful day with plenty of things to eat, things to see and places to hang out.

1.  Visit the Paddy Fields. Other than an endless carpet of brilliant green, the paddy fields are also the homes of swiflets as many swiflet houses are built in the vicinity of the fields. White birds and dragonflies are also part of the ecosystem.

Address : in the vicinity of Jalan Tali Air.

2.  Visit the Paddy Processing Factory and the Paddy Museum to
understand the complete life cycle of rice planting.  Japanese breed rice is available for purchase at an affordable price.

3.  Eat Seafood – lots of them.  There are many seafood restaurants dotted on the “Seafood Street”.  I really liked Cha Po Tion and Loong Hua, whereas Bagan Restaurant could have been better.

Click individual links to the restaurant for address.

4.  Snack Away at Pantai Redang Beach – where prawn crackers, fresh fruits and fresh juices prevail.  Still not good enough? Raw oysters should do it.  Do note that this area of the beach is popular and unfortunately not too clean.  However, if you are willing to go beyond this stretch, the next stretch is less visited and much cleaner.

Address : Redang Beach, Jalan Pantai Redang, 45400 Sekinchan, Selangor, Malaysia

5.  Make a wish at Pantai Redang Beach by throwing red ribbons onto the tree.  Whether the wish comes true or not, the tree entangled in red ribbons sure provides a gorgeous backdrop for photos.

Address : Redang Beach, Jalan Pantai Redang, 45400 Sekinchan, Selangor, Malaysia

6.  Enjoy panoramic views of Pendang Redang Beach and Fisherman’s Wharf at the white watch tower in Sekin Fisherman Village Hotel & Resort. A fee for entering the tower may be imposed in the future.

Address :  No 358, Jalan Pantai Redang, Bagan Sekinchan, Kampong Sekinchan, Selangor, Malaysia

7.  Visit the Fisherman’s Wharf – after all, Sekinchan is “the Land of Fish and Rice” and you might be able to catch a fisherman bringing back his harvest from the sea.

Address :  No 358, Jalan Pantai Redang, Bagan Sekinchan, Kampong Sekinchan, Selangor, Malaysia (opposite Sekin Fisherman Village Hotel & Resort).

8.  Eat giant mangoes that are as long as my forearm.  There is a mango orchard nearby the Paddy Processing Factory open to visitors.  You may purchase these uber-sweet and fleshy mangoes at the orchard or at a small stall that’s next to the Paddy Processing Factory.

Mangoes @ Sekinchan

9.  Lastly, if you would like to make it more than a day trip, add on a firefly tour in Kuala Selangor the night before you go to Sekinchan.  Kuala Selangor isn’t exactly in Sekinchan but it’s a short 30 minutes drive from Sekinchan.

Dim Sum @ Shanghai Restaurant, JW Marriott Hotel @ KL

DSC_0036
JW Marriott Hotel’s Shanghai Restaurant (苏浙苑) is a restaurant of grandeur, reliving old splendid Shanghai with red and gold motifs in delicate opulence.  Alongside Shanghainese cuisine, the restaurant also offers dim sum for lunch.

DSC_0009
The most memorable dish for this meal is the black truffle seafood noodles, conveniently split into two portions for the two of us (RM 100; the above picture is for one portion). Noodles are chewy, lightly oiled; and the marriage of seafood and thinly sliced truffles are truly an epic combination of jewels from the land and the sea.

DSC_0005
The truffle slices have a faint mushroom taste and are slightly damp with an inherent subtle taste of soil.  They remind me of cross sectional images of the brain, which makes them all even more fascinating.

DSC_9991
These xiaolongbao are dainty vessels, pocketing the sumptuous meat juices that are almost visible through the soft skin, ready to burst if mishandled (RM 12 for a basket of 4).

DSC_9995
“Har Gow” is an inevitable order in any dim sum restaurant we go to (RM 12).

DSC_9999
The prawn dumplings (RM 13.20) are enticing with the translucent skin hugging the prawns and bits of greens.  The freshness of the prawns could already be anticipated.

DSC_9971
Jelly fish is plain being just seasoned with a bit of salt; yet it is surprisingly refreshing when the simple crunch is paired with unconventional mustard sauce provided at the side (RM 13).

DSC_9978 DSC_9984
Our two kinds of “chee cheong fun”  – prawn (RM 13) and BBQ pork (RM 12) are smooth and light, at their best when topped with the rich shrimp paste provided.

DSC_0026 DSC_0035
Ending the meal with two sweet treats, we had “lau sa bao” (RM 14) which has custard-like and grainy yolk fillings.  Duck egg yolks please me when they come in any form though in the context of “lau sa bao”, they are a tad solid to live up the name of “lau sa”, which literally means “flowing sand”.

DSC_0015
The sago mango pomelo (RM 13) is chilled, where the lightly viscous mango puree gives off a sweet scent.  The slippery sagos add some fun to chowing down this delightful dessert.

Lao Ma Zi Restaurant @ Jalan Ipoh, KL

20141005_200757 (1)
Lao Mai Zi may seem like your typically Chinese “dai chow” restaurant yet they have a few dishes with a twist that lure patrons for a little something different, such as the smoked duck breast with lychee (RM 25).  The duck is the fattest duck I have had in Malaysia – fat enough to be sent to Beijing’s Quanjude to make a good roast out of it.  Immersed in lychee broth, the hint of lychee sweetness goes oh-so-well with the superbly smoky duck.

20141005_201211 (1)
The rice wine egg is another amusing creation (RM 14).  I am sure everyone have had rice wine chicken at some point but rice wine egg is almost unheard of.  Well I suppose if you can add wine to chicken, you should very well be able to do the same to eggs.  It’s really a simple dish cooked with thinly sliced ginger, scrambled eggs and simmered quickly in yellow wine with a bit of sugar, but the outcome is a blissful satisfaction that caught me off guard.

20141005_201446
This dish is known as salted egg “tofu” but it is really tofu mixed with fish paste with fish paste being the domineering ingredient.  Anyhow, as long as it has salted egg yolk, I am happy (RM 13).

20141005_201928
Stir fried egg  plant is resplendent of colors with purple egg plants in a light batter with basic aromatics of green scallions, red chili, and a dash of salt and pepper (RM 16).  The egg plant is all mushy though the spices didn’t coat on too well.

20141005_201221
Stir fried lotus (RM 13).

There’s one more dish which I didn’t take a picture of is the “Chin Cai Steamed Fish”, with “chin cai” meaning “anything goes” (RM 22).  The fish used is tilapia and steamed to tender.  Indeed I couldn’t really quite categorize it as Teow Chew steam, or plain steam because it has a bit of everything – ginger, scallion, rice wine, soy sauce, bean paste – I guess that’s where it got its name from!

20141005_211533 20141005_211712

The Ming Room serves delectable dim sum dishes that test patrons tenacity and patience especially on weekends, and I see many patrons are accepting the challenge, waiting as-a-matter-of-fact-ly for an empty table.  If you would like to eat at The Ming Room during weekends, it is a must that you make a reservation or be prepared to wait.  We were told even if we made a reservation, we might still need to wait.

DSC_0047
DSC_0041
So after 2 attempts, we finally had a chance to eat at the restaurant.  We made a reservation a day in advance, waited for our turn and witnessed a bit of chaos with the constant influx of patrons and the speedy clearing of the tables.

DSC_0049
It was worth the wait as some of their dishes are superb.  Char siew pork is irresistible because the meat is mostly lean with just a bit of fat and lightly charred with an even coating of sticky sweet soy sauce.

DSC_0058
Roast pork is an unforgettable dish that I am willing to sacrifice my diet plans for.  Diced longitudinally and uniformly, this roast pork is a harmonious balance of crunchy skin, tender fat and juicy meat.  The skin is porous and so crunchy it’s almost like eating cookie.

DSC_0070
The shrimp dumplings have a substantial amount of spinach that you could savor, not just for decoration purpose in most dumplings.

DSC_0078
The glutinous rice is another one of my favorite – wrapped in lotus leaf in a squarish parcel with egg yolk, Chinese sausage, chestnut and pork that has some of its fats almost in melting stage seeping their way through the glutinous rice.  It’s quite a big parcel, probably three times the size of the usual “lo mai  gai”.

DSC_0062
These fried yam balls are not oily at all and have a light coating, encasing a soft yam layer and a pinch of meat filling.

DSC_0054
The fish cake is Thai-cuisine-inspired with a whiff of lemon grass and a bit of chili.

DSC_0074
The fishballs are a bit different from the usual one with some black, thread-like pieces – I am guessing it’s from yam but I couldn’t quite discern any yam flavors.

DSC_0082
DSC_0048
Chee cheong fun with prawn is flawless, especially when topped with this sumptuous shrimp paste.

DSC_0081
The fried radish cake is hearty and gorgeously presented where the cake is charred lightly, accompanied with yellow eggs, white bean sprouts, green scallions and red chili flakes – although the texture of the cake is too mushy and not too distinctive.

DSC_0073DSC_0068
Here are two more dishes – “har gow” and dumplings with shark-fin-look-alikes, but pictures only as I didn’t get to try them.  6 people and 3 pieces – something’s gotta give.

Macau Food Festival

DSC_1205The annual Food Festival in Macau draws more crowd than ever, celebrating the diversity of food in Macau.  It gets even better than that because international restaurateurs are invited to participate in this event, presenting authentic flavors from their home countries.  Last year, it was restaurateurs from Thailand and this year, it’s restaurateurs from Kasai of Japan.

DSC_1230 DSC_1235
The Food Festival takes place just beneath the enchanting Macau Tower, with hundreds of eateries at your disposal, including many popular restaurants, local “must-eats” and restaurants from posh hotels, all conveniently gathered at one location for you to embark on a gastronomical journey.

DSC_1224 DSC_1226 DSC_1228
To start off with a refreshing drink, we had Kirin beer which is not your typical beer as it is “frozen” Kirin beer.  The beer was of course superbly cold with the white foams all mushy and had the texture of slurpee.

DSC_1213 DSC_1216 DSC_1214
The glutinous rice from Li Jing Xuan of Riviera Hotel became a famous dish when the Chief Executive of Macau requested for this dish – also referred to Chief Executive’s glutinous rice.

DSC_1253
The salted fish buns were fluffy with the fusing flavors of salted fish and minced meat.

DSC_1259 DSC_1284
We tried the trio of chicken, noodles and beef slices from Old Sze Chuan Restaurant – all smothered with numbing and spicy flavors of Sze Chuan.

DSC_1258
The skewered mutton was just as fiery.

DSC_1262 DSC_1302
This Shanghainese restaurant has an amusing name that’s really easy to remember – it’s called “Four Five Six Shanghainese Restaurant” – popular for xiaolongbao.  The xiaolongbao was a bit cold by the time I got to try it because we had to buy it from the stall and walk some distance back to our table, but nonetheless filled with juicy essence from the meat.

DSC_1236 DSC_1237
DSC_1239
For this year’s Food Festival, there is a whole section dedicated to restaurateurs from Kansai of Japan.  With the typical Japanese fish market, the smell of grilled seafood that permeates the air and Japanese pop songs in the background, this section is as Japanese as it can get.

DSC_1266
We were spoiled for choices with big, fat and juicy crab legs,

DSC_1265
succulent Wagyu beef,

DSC_1303 DSC_1305
lightly charred seafood, and many more items such as sushi and ramen.

DSC_1280 DSC_1309
Here is our fantastic dinner spread!

DSC_1250 DSC_1243
As for dessert, we picked two traditional Macanese desserts – the serradura and the agar agar.

DSC_1609
Serradura is also known as “saw dust pudding” and an absolute must-try when you are in Macau.  It is like an upside down cheese cake – with the thinly-shaven cookie crumbs (hence the name “saw dust”) generously sprinkled on top of the pudding instead of compressed at the bottom of the cake.  The pudding is smooth, intensely milky and comes in various flavors like strawberry chestnut. While the cake is commonly seen in Macau, the Serrdura Cafe specializes in this dessert.

DSC_1313Macau Food Festival 9DSC_1308
The agar agar / ice cream store “Mok Yee kei” has some 80 years of history, with the original store located on Rue do Cunha in Taipa.  We tried two flavors of agar agar – egg white and mango – both with a crumbly texture and feathery light flavor.

DSC_1223 DSC_1222 DSC_1321
On top of trying all kinds of food at the festival, many classic Chinese bakery stores have their booths there – such as Yeng Kei, Koi Kee and Choi Heong Yuen.  It’s the best place to make a comparison, whether it’s in terms of price or flavor.

DSC_1220
DSC_1326
And lastly, the Macau Food Festival serves a wealth of food  – many which we had no more stomach for, including Indian, Thai, Portugese and South American.  We spent one night at the festival and it was definitely not enough to savor everything so it might be a good idea to be there for two nights or more !

The newly opened Chang Jiang White Coffee Cafe off Jalan Gopeng brings us back to the olden days.  Marbled table tops, giant mirrors and old fashioned panel windows reminisce the typical kopitiam, but at the same time, the cafe is demurely fashionable with Tiffany blue chairs and pink window frames.   The cafe is more than appearance of looking old as there is indeed history with Chang Jiang White Coffee – whereby the Kong family came from China 3 generations ago, landed in Ipoh and started off their business with wantan mee and white coffee

The old machines that once roasted coffee are displayed at the cafe garden, now serving as only memorabilia as coffee is no longer manually roasted and the task has been overtaken by modern machines.

This particular registration form caught my attention as it says “Republic of China Overseas Chinese Registration Form” – Republic of China (Taiwan) being where I am from.  The registration form was issued in the 1920’s so that’s almost a century old.

I had two coffees – the white coffee with milk ( RM 4.20) had a strong scent of charcoal while the white coffee (kosong) (RM 3.50) had an even more powerful charred scent and strangely had a subtle herbal flavor.

Chang Jiang Signature Noodles (RM 8.90) was a feast with substantial toppings on wantan mee including tenderly braised chicken feet, egg, tofu, vegetable, minced chicken with a sprinkle of deep-fried onions.

DSC_3396
The meal was simple, given that it’s just really wantan mee and coffee, yet not so simple because of the variety and the abundance of the ingredients used.

If you love the coffee, coffee sachets are available for purchase in the room adjacent to the dining area.

Other items on the menu include snacks such as kaya toast, half-boiled eggs, braised eggs and a rice dish that uses similar toppings as the signature noodles.  Food ranges from RM 5 to RM 9, while drinks and coffee range from RM 3.50 to RM 5.80.

I’ve had the chance to try the contemporary Chinese Restaurant – Le Chinois in Sofitel Macau At Ponte 16 where innovative dim sum is delicately prepared, and classic Chinese dishes come with a twist.

Le Chinois @ Sofitel Macau 2 Le Chinois @ Sofitel Macau 1 Le Chinois @ Sofitel Macau 22Le Chinois is sophisticated in red with both common dining area and private dining rooms available.  The private rooms get a panoramic view of Macau’s urban sprawl as well.  We’ve had too many dishes to sample so I am going to start with my top 5 favorite dishes.

DSC_0883
1. Kungfu Soup – not the literal meaning of martial arts kungfu, but the other meaning of having put in a painstaking amount of effort into the preparation process – evident in this classic Chinese lotus soup in a dainty teapot.  The key ingredient is the abundance of dried scallops used, making this soup unbelievably sweeter than the average soup.  The teapot keeps the soup hot throughout the meal and drinking out of the tea cup allows you to savor the soup bit by bit.

DSC_0912
DSC_0910
2.  Braised Winter Melon with Salted Vegetables – this cheeky dish that disguises as the classic braised pork dish is in fact winter melon – refreshingly light, braised to perfect tenderness almost similar to that of meat.

DSC_0918
DSC_0922
3.  Scallop Siew Mai (MOP 36) – siew mai has never really been my “must-order” item when I eat dim sum.  But when topped with an inviting piece of scallop on top, I am all in for it.  The thoughtful oiled slices of cucumber that cushion the siew mai prevents the awkward wrestle between your chopsticks and the white paper that tends to stick to dim sum.  The cucumber slices are also present in the other dim sum to come.

DSC_0919
4.  Crispy Carrot Shaped Chicken Roll (MOP 38) – Shaped liked carrot with Italian parsley disguised as carrot leaves, the rolls have an intriguing mix of flavor & texture.  The orange part is sweet and starchy with a crisp outer layer, encasing a filling of savory minced meat.

DSC_0929
5.  Mango Dessert with Birds’ Nest (MOP 36) – the intoxicating scent of mango is to die for and I could die again for the translucent shreds of birds’ nests that adorn the pudding.

DSC_0906
6.  Roast Chicken is a typical Chinese dish quite commonly found in Chinese restaurants.  The paper-thin and ultra crisp chicken skin is what makes this one different.

DSC_0909
DSC_0915
7.  Char Siew & Roast Duck Combo – another beautiful dish with just an adequate amount of grease to make the dish appear all glossy.

DSC_0897
8.  Fresh Bamboo Shoots Roll (MOP 28) – a classic dim sum with a twist, where it gets dipped into the superior broth provided for extra flavor.

DSC_0911
DSC_0902
9.  Xiaolongbao (MOP 38) &  10.  Prawn Dumplings (MOP 38) – always a pleaser.

DSC_0900
10. Chee Cheong Fun (MOP 38) – I didn’t get to try this dish actually as there were too many!  But my companions did mention it was silky-smooth.

DSC_0889
11. Spring Roll with Kraft Sauce (MOP 38)- an exquisite dish that amazes me with the sound of flawless crackling.

DSC_0880
12.  Simple Vegetable Dish (MOP 28).

DSC_0931DSC_0930
A few items are not indicated with price as they are off the dim sum menu, but perhaps served at dinner.  Do inquire with Le Chinois if those are the dishes you are interested in.

O Cafe @ Ipoh, Canning Garden

O Cafe (2号小厨) is located in Canning Garden, featuring Hakka cuisine that has captured our hearts.  It has a signboard, but not exactly strategically placed as it is placed on the floor.  The only thing prominent about the cafe is the big “2” on the facade, which would be the best thing to note if you are looking for the cafe.

DSC_4790
DSC_4791

The cafe is delightful in sunny colors while old match boxes and paper baskets exude a hint of nostalgia.

DSC_4793

I used to make these paper baskets when I was like 8 years old ! Not sure if people still make these anymore !

DSC_4801

The cuisine is full of warmth; prepared with affection and somewhat old fashioned too. Everything plays a prominent role in this chicken rice wine mee sua – the generous splash of rice wine, the crisp wood ear fungus, the punchy ginger, the succulent chicken, the mee sua mopping up the soup and with a dash of sweetness, it’s fantastic and full of character (RM 14.90).

DSC_4817 DSC_4821

The bowlful of braised pork in crimson red is luscious and paired with thinly shredded wood ear fungus to create a texture contrast.

DSC_4809

The vegetarian curry is light on the flavor of curry and has a heavy dose of santan, which we not only ate everything but slurped everything too (RM 8.90).

DSC_4814

Floral tea at RM 4.50.

DSC_4800

Other items on the menu include stir-fry noodles, braised tofu + egg, steamed pomfret, three cups chicken, vegetables and more.

Cafe De Casalingo @ Ipoh

Cafe De Casalingo is a bit in the middle of nowhere.  If you are on the way to KL via the Simpang Pulai toll, the Cafe might be a good pit stop as it’s on the way.  Precisely that too, the cafe offers some of the most affordable dishes in town, with set lunches in the range of RM 14.90 – RM 16.90, inclusive of starter, main course and a drink.  In fact, nothing is over RM 20 here.

Cafe De Casalingo @ Ipoh 2

Pork chop is one of the easiest thing to make and it would easily please anyone as it is comfort food.  Surprisingly it’s not present in most of the cafes in Ipoh.  Now I’ve found it at De Casalingo, I know where to go when I have craving for pork chop ! The three slices of pork chops are pan-fried, drizzled with an onion-based red wine sauce and accompanied by buttery mashed potatoes, a small salad and fruits (RM 14.90).

Cafe De Casalingo @ Ipoh 4
Cafe De Casalingo @ Ipoh 5

The hot chocolate is so-so though (RM 5.90).

Cafe De Casalingo @ Ipoh 1

Other items on De Casalingo’s menu include beer, snacks, spaghetti, panini, mini burgers and a good range of charcoal burgers with fish, chicken, bacon or pork chop to choose from.  Items like grilled chicken, lamb chop are available in both East and West style – either with mashed potatoes or with rice.

Vegan Life @ Ipoh

Vegan Life Restaurant in Ipoh Garden advocates for not just only vegetarian, but also healthy eating using less oil, less salt and less sugar.  The interior is literally green too and resonates with the ideology.  I was dumbfounded when I was looking through the menu because everything looks so good, so natural and I had a hard time choosing – should I take the mee hoon made with brown rice? Or the konjac/konnyaku rice with minimal calories? Or the 10 grain porridge which really should be the way to obtain your essential nutrients ? Or the vegetarian fish topped with herbal toona sinensis sauce – a sauce that’s popular in Taiwan but not too commonly seen in Malaysia ?

DSC_6271

After all that pondering, I went with the vegan tomato seaweed porridge with 10 grains, which came piping hot in a claypot (RM 7.99).  At first glace, the unexpected reddish color surprised me because I was expecting something white as usual.  One sip of the porridge solves the mystery as the red color comes from the copious amount of tomatoes used, stewed to mushy, and rendering the natural sweetness of the fruit into the porridge.

DSC_6265

The porridge is textured with different grains such as red beans, barley and brown rice.  And with plenty of mushrooms, seaweed and goji berries, the porridge is a hearty meal bursting with wholesome flavors.

DSC_6267

Vegan Life Restaurant serves  a good variety of both Asian and Western food, many in the range of RM 10 or less.  I am definitely going to come back here again :)

Cafe De Flore @ Ipoh Canning Garden

The convivial Cafe de Flore serveing mouth-watering Hakka cuisine is spicing up Canning Garden’s neighborhood with its glittering lights. Not too much resemblance with the famed Cafe de Flore in Paris, but it’s a pretty name to turn heads in Ipoh.

DSC_4642

The cafe is set up in a single storey bungalow with a homey ambiance it was more like visiting a friend’s house instead of a cafe.  The porch definitely looks like the place to chill over a cuppa.

DSC_4639
DSC_4626

The cafe is run by two friendly sisters who also have an obvious passion for fashion, so you not only get a taste of Hakka cuisine but a taste of fashion too.

DSC_4636

I took the set meal which consists of braised pork + soup + floral tea (RM 19.90).  The floral tea has a generous mix of few types of flowers with lavender being the dominant flavor, while the others I am just going to call them yellow flowers and red flowers (saffron perhaps?)

DSC_4608

Braised pork is a classic dish that pretty much any Chinese household would have made this with their own interpretations and variations.  At Cafe de Flore – the dish is cooked with seaweed which is a nice touch, making the sauce a tad gooey with flavors from the sea.   A spoonful of vegetables would make this a smashing set.

DSC_4599 DSC_4604

Pretty in rose, the rossell tea (RM 5.90) in crimson red tastes rather similar to Ribena and at the same time it brings back memories of Cameron Highlands because the rossell flower is commonly seen there usually in the form of pickles.

DSC_4622

There weren’t a lot of choices for foor on that day – Hakka style braised pork and chicken curry only, but I think they have a few more items on the menu by now such as vinegar pork knuckle, lotus soup, pork chop and pork belly + yam.

STG Boutique Cafe @ Ipoh

While the concept of “the older the better, the shabbier the better” has inspired many cafes in the old town of Ipoh and created a wave among Ipohans, STG Boutique Cafe has done just the opposite, refurbishing an old colonial building to its majestic former glory while infusing a contemporary charm.  The results? Just as stunning.

DSC_6460

There are two entrances to the building, one of which will welcome you to the lobby with a bouquet of gorgeous flowers against a floor of whimsical tiles.

DSC_6446

The other will take you directly to the dining area composed of a cool palette in shades of blue and grey.

DSC_6450 DSC_6453

For starters, we had wild mushroom soup where the texture of itsy-bitsy mushroom bits are tantalizing.  The soup is RM 13 a la carte, but if you are dining at the cafe from Monday – Friday 12 pm – 2 pm, there’s a lunch promotion that if you just add RM 2 on top of your main course, the soup is yours with an ice/hot lemon tea.

DSC_6340

The “Meat” section on the menu is stated with “from Australia only”, an assurance to the quality of meat you will be receiving.  I went with the Paprika Lamb Rack (RM 68) and no regrets.  The lamb is grilled to medium well, leaving the center of the lamb with a dash of pink.  Dab it with the medium-bodied, savory Rosemary sauce and the succulent meat is at its supremacy.  The lamb can be cooked to your specification if you would like it to be more rare.

DSC_6379   DSC_6390

The majority of food on the menu is Western with chef-recommended dishes such as Tea Smoked Chicken Whole Leg, French Duck Confit, Tenderloin Steak and Lamb Sandwich (in the range of RM 20 – RM 68).  There’s also a selection of local delights, in which we picked the Nasi Lemak Ala Kampung (RM 25).  You’ll never go wrong with this Malaysian national dish.

STG Boutique Cafe’s version includes curried crispy chicken, crunchy anchovies, onion sambal with a hint of sweetness, and the usuals of of egg and peanuts.

DSC_6355

The cafe serves an extensive range of Sabah teas from the highlands of Borneo.  The teas are pesticide free and brewed with Spritzer mineral water.

Our  teh tarik (RM 8)  arrived with an unfamiliar color that’s much lighter than the ones that we are used too, but the flavor is big and infused with an uncommon ingredient of pandan.  Other ingredients you may choose to add to your teh tarik include cinnamon, lemongrass, wild mint and ginger.

DSC_6412

The Angel’s Kiss (RM 16) is refreshing with the scent of papayas, pineapple, strawberry and rose and well balanced with Sabah tea where all the elements stood out enough for you to have a taste of everything without being overwhelmed by a particular flavor.  You will mostly likely to ask the waiter to “add water” for a second round of tea because the tea is so good, but only to find out that there are no tea leaves or tea bags in the pot, the reason being that the tea is brewed to its optimal condition before serving and any variables is taken out of the equation so you won’t be drinking tea that’s underbrewed, or overbrewed, but perfectly brewed.

DSC_6351

Cute tea hampers are available too !

DSC_6456

The chocolate Lava Cake (RM 15) takes a prep time of 15 minutes, but every minute of it is worth the wait.  The sight of chocolate lava oozing out of the warm cake is simply irresistible, not to mention that you get to pair with chocolate-drizzled vanilla ice cream.

DSC_6396 DSC_6399

The alcohol-laced tiramisu (RM 13) could possibly be one of the best in town with the bottom layer sponge cake soaking up the Kahlua, followed by mascarpone and a luscious layer of cocoa powder.  There’s a 50 % cake promotion too for Monday – Friday 3 pm to 6 pm with every order of tea or coffee.

DSC_6404

The upstairs section of the cafe caters to private events from 8 to 80 pax.

DSC_6443

The bouquet at the entrance now viewed from above is still as beautiful !

DSC_6440

This is one of the three private rooms for 8 – 12 pax.

DSC_6420

For bigger events, the seemingly infinite green room with a wall of mirrors and the exquisite red room are available.

34 Cafes to Visit in Ipoh,

81 Cafes to Visit in Ipoh).
34 Cafes to Visit in Ipoh索引。

Cafe

1.  Ami Domicile

Ami Domicile Cafe @ Ipoh 3Ami Domicile Cafe @ Ipoh 6

5.  Café De Flore

Cafe De Flore @ Ipoh 1 Cafe De Flore @ Ipoh 10

Classix 253 @ Ipoh 8 Classix 253 @ Ipoh 3

14. De Dine

De Dine @ Ipoh 5 De Dine @ Ipoh 11

18.  Green Hill Café

Green Hill Sandwich & Smoothies Bistro @ Ipoh 3 Green Hill Sandwich & Smoothies Bistro @ Ipoh 6

19.  Gomok

Gomok @ Ipoh 9 Gomok @ Ipoh 3

21.  Ketps Café

Ketps Cafe Ipoh 3 Ketps Cafe Ipoh 1

22. LC n LY Café

LC N LY Cafe Ipoh 2 LC N LY Cafe Ipoh 9

24. Milk House Café

Milk House Cafe @ Ipoh 8 Milk House Cafe @ Ipoh 6

STG Boutique Cafe @ Ipoh 6 STG Boutique Cafe @ Ipoh 14

The sandwich - calorie reckoner @ Ipoh 4 The sandwich - calorie reckoner @ Ipoh 5

1.  Annie Music & Dining Café

Annie Dining & Music Cafe Ipoh 3 Annie Dining & Music Cafe Ipoh 7

81 Cafes to Visit in Ipoh

$
0

It’s a new year, new beginning and more new cafes to visit in Ipoh.  Last year, when I wrote 34 Cafes to Visit in Ipoh, I thought that sounded like a big number for small town Ipoh and that number might reach a plateau soon.  I was so wrong.  In 2014 itself, at least 40 new cafes opened.  You still get the boutique cafes and the crossover cafes.  This time, there are also cafes that are not as boutique, but food is good and reasonably priced.  You get a few cafes with unique food creations, but the cafe menu in general is still mostly predictable – the usual pasta, sandwiches and burgers.  You are not going to get anything like “Provencal Four Seasons Salad” or “Croissant with Roquefort and Gorgonzala”, but just try asking for the signature dish and you might be pleasantly surprised.

The list is in three sections.
Section 1 : The latest 39 cafes that opened in 2014 and I’ve managed to catch a few that opened in 2015.
Section 2: There are 8 cafes in this section, featuring cafes that opened in 2013 or earlier, some I missed out last year and some were recommended by readers.
Section 3 : The original 34 Cafes are indexed here for easy reference.
So that makes 81 of them and I decided to do a Chinese version too this year –> 怡保81间特色咖啡屋/Cafe 攻略秘籍。For more information for each of the cafe, click on the individual links provided below.

Section 1 – The Latest Cafes in 2014 & 2015

1.  Ami Domicile

Ami Domicile Cafe @ Ipoh 3Ami Domicile Cafe @ Ipoh 6
Ami Domicile has opted for the minimalist look and all the focus will be on the food. The white wine cream linguine is splendid with the scent of lightly charred bacon saying hello before anything else.   The dish is well balanced with ample amounts of mushroom, ham and a pleasurable herb-based white cream with a drizzle of olive oil.  I even like the utensils there, heavyweight yet elegant, which instantly ups the dining experience.   Expect Rm 20 – RM30 per person for one food and one drink.

2.  Basileuo Salad Café

Basileuo salad @ Ipoh Basileuo Salad Cafe @ Ipoh Green Town 1
If you are counting calories, you can forget about it at Basileuo Salad Café because there is no need to.  The simplistic cafe in green oozes fresh energy with a focus on healthy food that’s light on the use of oil, salt but big in nutritional values, with almost 50 different kinds of salad toppings to choose from.  You may opt to choose your own toppings or you can let the chef surprise you with her choices.  Salad is not the only thing with a healthy focus; other items on the menu such as sandwich, pasta and soup stick to the same regimen.  The East-Meets-West smoked salmon panini is worth a try.  Expect Rm 20 – RM30 per person for one food and one drink.

3.  Café 1961

Cafe 1961 @ Ipoh 13Cafe 1961 @ Ipoh 3
Full of energetic vibe, Cafe 1961 at Station 18 serves delectable food with an artsy charm.   The exuberant  chalk arts on the black walls make awesome backdrops for a hip and chic selfie.  The Portuguese baked rice is topped with a succulent layer of chicken and smothered with cheese and a sauce similar to Japanese curry, except this one has an extra hint of galangal.  We enjoyed the mushroom soup in coffee mug and the peppery chicken chop too.   Expect Rm 15 – RM 25 per person for one food and one drink.

4.  Café De Eight

Cafe De Eight Ipoh 14  Cafe De Eight Ipoh 5
Café De Eight is located discreetly amidst a row of wholesales stores in Ipoh Old Town.  The café exudes a poetic ambiance whereby books, movie-inspired murals and movie posters dominate the mottled walls.  The pork burger consists of a moist patty that has a crackling outer crust and the secret weapon used – pork lard, makes it especially fantastic .  Pair it with mojito mocktail.  The café also has a unique service where they help you to send a postcard on a future date – all you need to do is slot in the postcard in the multicolored collage made of 365 pieces of pockets with each pocket representing a specific date. Expect Rm 10 – RM 25 per person for one food and one drink.

5.  Café De Flore

Cafe De Flore @ Ipoh 1 Cafe De Flore @ Ipoh 10
The convivial Cafe de Flore serves mouth-watering Hakka cuisine in a homey ambiance.  Set in a single storey bungalow, the glittering porch definitely looks like the place to chill over a cuppa.   The braised pork here is cooked with seaweed, adding a gooey texture and a flavor from the sea.  The floral tea has a delectable mix of flowers with the lavender being the dominant flavor, while the rossell tea brings back memories of Cameron Highlands as it is commonly seen there and often pickled.  Expect Rm 15 – RM 25 per person for one food and one drink.

6.  Chang Jiang White Coffee Cafe

Chang Jiang White Coffee Cafe Ipoh 10Chang Jiang White Coffee Cafe Ipoh 7
Chang Jiang White Coffee Cafe
brings us back to the olden days.  Marbled table tops, giant mirrors and old fashioned windows reminisce the typical kopitiam, but at the same time, the cafe is demurely fashionable with Tiffany blue chairs and pink window frames.   The signature wantan noodles are simple, yet with the variety and the abundance of toppings used, the noodles are instantly transformed into a feast.   The white coffee – especially the “kosong” ones have a powerful charred scent with a subtle herbal flavour.  Expect RM 10 – RM 15 per person for one food and one drink.

7.  Chokodok Reggae House

Chokodok Reggae House Cafe Ipoh 3  Chokodok Reggae House Cafe Ipoh 10
Chokodok Reggae House Cafe & Backpackers  is an eye catching piece located on Hugh Low Street with a chillaxing atmosphere that reminds me of eclectic bars by the beach.  The facade is painted with representative reggae colors of green, yellow and red.  The color combination is also found inside the cafe with images of the late, phenomenal Reggae singer Bob Marley.  Chokodok serves a mix of Malaysian and Western cuisines like nasi goreng,  nasi kampung, burgers and chicken chop that are fairly reasonably priced.  Expect RM 15 – RM 25 per person for one food and one drink.

8.  Classix 253

Classix 253 @ Ipoh 8 Classix 253 @ Ipoh 3
There are no big sign boards on this low profile halal café.  The only things that indicate it’s a food joint are the blue tents outside and amazingly it has unconventional peak hours from 5 pm to 7 pm because of jaw-droppingly-priced set meals from RM 5.50 to RM 6.50 (limited to 50 pax).  The café has an antique vibe to it with all things old while the large chalkboard is free for all to write a comment on.  Food is prepared beforehand so it doesn’t come sizzling hot, but considering the price and the portion, that’s acceptable.  Expect RM 10 – RM 15 per person for one food and one drink.

9.  Coffee Tag

Coffee Tag Ipoh 4Coffee Tag Ipoh 1
“Tag” seems to be inevitable in our lives.  As if it’s presence is not enough in social media, “#” has a role to play in coffee as well.  Coffee Tag’s humongous # sign and a high contrast black & yellow façade definitely draws the young crowd.  Other than the typical latte and capuccino, this light industrial-chic café with lofty ceilings serves adventurous coffee concoctions like durian and Nutella coffee, along with light meals and simple pastries.
Expect RM 15 – RM 25 per person for one food and one drink

10.  Coffeeright Place

Coffee right Place Ipoh 3 Coffee right Place Ipoh 8
Coffeeright Place is a quaint little cafe that’s spicing up Jalan Kampar with the skylines of New York – presented in black and white while highlighting some of the buildings in brilliant colors making them lively and lego-like.    The black pepper baked rice is heavenly where a lavish topping of melted cheese forms a luscious golden blanket, covering an extremely peppery piece of pork and caramelized onions on a bed of fried rice .  Price-wise, it’s quite similar to boutique cafes in Ipoh in general, meaning it’s quite pricey – but, the portion provided is substantial for a complete meal without ordering a dessert.  Expect RM 15 – RM 30 per person for one food and one drink.

More Info: Non Halal.

11.  D Espresso Café

D Espresso CafeD Espresso Cafe Ipoh 7
D Espresso Cafe
is quite a low profile cafe located in Station 18.  It has a plain facade with a simple blue signboard but once you enter  the cafe, it’s eclectic with nostalgia, DIY and personal touches. The cooking style is rather homey, evident with the minimal use of oil and salt; and food is cooked fresh as per order.  The café has a few interesting items like pork lasagna and bloody duck (?!) but they were sold out on the day of my visit.  I did get to try the fish with enticing crisscrossed grill-marks that could do with a drizzle of lemon.
Expect RM 15 – RM 25 per person for one food and one drink.

More Info : Non Halal.

12.  D Fusion Café

D Fusion @ Ipoh 1 D Fusion @ Ipoh 5
D Fusion Café is one of the rare ones with the incorporation of Japanese cuisine on top of the typical Western cuisine.  The Japanese dishes include curry rice, ramen, snacks and teppanyaki, at an uber affordable price too.  Seafood ramen has a copious amount of seafood including scallops and only at RM 11.90.  It is presented with an amusing amount of seaweed, possibly the biggest bunch of seaweed I have ever seen.  Expect RM 15 – RM 20 per person for one food and one drink.

13.  De Casalingo

Cafe De Casalingo @ Ipoh 4 Cafe De Casalingo @ Ipoh 2
De Casalingo is located almost in Ipoh, on the way to the Simpang Pulai toll.  The sweet café in pink is another super affordable one with a good range of Asian and Western food to choose from. The pork chops are pan-fried with a drizzle of red wine sauce – one of the easiest things to make but somehow rarely seen on the menu in Ipoh.  Beer is available here as well.  Expect RM 10 – 20 per person for one drink and one food.

More Info : Non Halal

14. De Dine

De Dine @ Ipoh 5 De Dine @ Ipoh 11
De Dine may seem like your usual café in Ipoh, but it’s signature dish the De Dine Pasta is one of the best pastas I’ve tried in Ipoh.  The prawns are lightly chargrilled to perfection and tossed with spaghetti in a heavenly prawn bisque. That charred flavor has also  infused into the spaghetti and with onions as aromatics, an intoxicating flavor is born.   Other dishes  here are well executed too.  An addictive  one is the mashed potato, so smooth and buttery my brains tell  me to not eat  too  much of carbohydrates, but my hands and mouth just ignored the advice.  Expect RM 15 – 25 per person for one drink and one food.

15. Ficca’s Café

Ficca's Cafe @ Ipoh 1Ficca's Cafe @ Ipoh 10
The grey palette creates a relaxed and easy-going atmosphere at Ficca’s Café where coffee aficionados can enjoy a cuppa from a vast range of coffee, whether it’s the balancing coffee, liqueur coffee, single origin coffee or Turkish coffee.  The balancing coffee is quite a spectacle where the nifty combination of technology and sleek design keep the drinkers enthralled .  Selection on food is limited at the moment. Expect RM 15 – 25 per person for one drink and one food.

16.  Food and Desire

Food & Desire @ Ipoh 2 Food & Desire @ Ipoh 3
If you are looking for a little oink oink, Food & Desire would be the place to go.  On top of that, it serves some out-of-the-norm creations on top of the typical cafe menu we see in Ipoh, such as porky fries, cereal killer and chocolate fondue to name a few.  The Middle Eastern inspired “magic carpet” is enticing with sweet capsicum and chicken medley that sit atop a piece of carpet paratha, accompanied with a strong charred scent. End the meal with gourmet Kapiti ice cream from New Zealand.  Expect RM 30 – RM 45 per person for one food and one drink.

17.  Foods Project Café

Foods Project Cafe @ Sunway, Ipoh 3 Foods Project Cafe @ Sunway, Ipoh 6
At Foods Project Café, pallets and random wood pieces are put to good use where a clock is hidden amongst wooden squares, while both a swing and a monkey hang from the wooden tree.  Cuisine served here is Malay and Western.  Try the tantalizing mee rebus made by the owner’s mother.  Other desserts that looked interesting on the menu include Pavlova, batik cake and diam slice.  Expect RM 15 – RM 20 per person for one food and one drink.

18.  Green Hill Café

Green Hill Sandwich & Smoothies Bistro @ Ipoh 3 Green Hill Sandwich & Smoothies Bistro @ Ipoh 6
Green Hill Café has one of the most affordable breakfast sets in town.  The variety of panini sandwiches includes tuna, chicken ham + cheese and egg +avocado, etc, and with a black coffee, most of the sets are just under RM 10.  The panini bread is different from the ones I’ve tried; it’s bigger but thinner, so it has an extra crunch when toasted.  The  smoked salmon quiche is delectable with a hint of herbs and a smoky flavour infused throughout the quiche.  Expect RM 10 – RM 15 per person for one food and one drink.

19.  Gomok

Gomok @ Ipoh 9 Gomok @ Ipoh 3
The little round chubby guy with a tie is Gomok’s mascot – perhaps hinting that the food is so good we will become “gemuk” (fat) after eating at Gomok.  The food here consists of Malay and Western cuisine in substantial portions with some  carnivorous selections.  My basket of protein-heavy assorted meats is a sumptuous feast and did I mention some of the meats have cheese embedded within too? The dude sitting at the next table chowing down the giant 200 g beef burger looks totally indulged. Expect RM 15 – RM 40 per person for one food and one drink.

20.  Hobo @ Ganlee & Co

Hobo @ Ganlee & Co, Ipoh 17    Hobo @ Ganlee & Co, Ipoh 5
Hobo @ Ganlee & Co definitely belongs to the category of cafes that will instantly start an instagram craze the moment you enter – an origami inspired 2d dinosaur on the wall and a Pinocchiao in hiding are a few things for example.   Old cookie tins, salvaged doors and even a dead tree (an artistic one) have been given a new life here.  Waffles, pancakes, French toasts and of course coffee dominate the café.  I enjoyed the exhilarating cold brew, the mint hot chocolate, while the waffle still has room for improvement.   Expect RM 15 – RM 25 per person for one food and one drink.

More Info: Halal
Address : 146 Brewster Road, Ipoh, Perak
Opening Hours : 6 pm – 1 am.

21.  Ketps Café

Ketps Cafe Ipoh 3 Ketps Cafe Ipoh 1
Ever thought of having a go at coffee art? You can do that now at Ketps Café as the café is the only place in Ipoh where you can use coffee as canvas and paint with melted chocolate.  The 3D coffees here say hello in the form of piggies and hippos.  They will sure make a lot of girls fall in love with the bubbly, foamy characters.  The desserts are pretty-looking with adventurous combinations like peanuts plus mangos, but perhaps too adventurous for me I still prefer the classics.  The cafe has almost a 100 % emphasis on desserts and coffee so it’s suitable for tea time.  Expect RM 20 – RM25 per person for one food and one drink.

22. LC n LY Café

LC N LY Cafe Ipoh 2 LC N LY Cafe Ipoh 9
LC n LY cafe is not located in your usual prime areas in Ipoh like old town, but in the Falim industrial area on the way to Menglembu.  Thanks to that, the food here is decently priced and nett-priced.  The menu consists of a good selection of local and western food with premium items like cod fish; it’s the typical kind of Ipoh cafe menus before the advent of boutique cafes.  The café is in energetic green with unique mirror menu written in pink ink, at last, something different from a chalk board menu!  The coffee served here is a sizeable portion and liquor-laced coffee options are available.  Expect RM 20 – RM70 per person for one food and one drink.

Address : 15 Persiaran Menglembu Suria, Pusat Perniagaan Mengleumbu Suria, 30200 Ipoh, Perak.

23. Memoirs Café

Memoirs Cafe @ Ipoh 9  Memoirs Cafe @ Ipoh 5
Memoirs Cafe is filled with cartoon characters; not Anna and Elsa from Frozen, or the minions from Despicable Me, but old-schooled characters like Popeye, Ninja Turtles, the Thunder Cats and Doraemon. While typical pasta and sandwiches are served here, the dessert portfolio is more interesting with chocolate lollipop, ice cream bun and Haggen Dazs ice cream.  The chocolate lollipop is my favorite, delectably rich yet not overly sweet and so joyful with the colorful sprinkles. Expect RM 10 – RM25 per person for one food and one drink.

24. Milk House Café

Milk House Cafe @ Ipoh 8 Milk House Cafe @ Ipoh 6
The cow statue in front of the café says it all.  On top of serving café food, the Milk House Cafe serves fresh milk, delivered daily from the origin of production; fresh cow’s milk from farm in Sungai Siput and fresh goat’s milk from farm in Kelian.  The super-narrow and cavernous café is probably the only café that caters to both halal and non halal requirements, strange but true.  The halal items are prepared by Ritz Hotel just behind the café from 3 pm onwards, while the non-halal items are prepared by Euro House right next to the café.  Expect RM 20 – RM 35 per person for one food and one drink.

More Info: Halal & Non Halal.

25.  Morsel Eatery

Morsel Eatery @ Ipoh 8 Morsel Eatery @ Ipoh 5
Morsel Eatery may seem a familiar sight as it is brought to you by the same group behind Myth and Jose & Deli, only that this concept is not entirely new because the interior is the marriage of the two existing places.  The food is generally well executed, but the stunning interior tends to outshine the food.  Expect RM 25 – RM 50 per person for one food and one drink.

More Info : Non Halal.
Address : 23, A, Jalan Dato Seri 1, Ahmad Said Ipoh 30450

26. Mustard Sandwich House Café

Mustard Sandwich House Ipoh 13 Mustard Sandwich House Ipoh 2
“Yellow” is an inevitable color at the Mustard Sandwich House Café.   Popping blue, industrial grey and French doors make this café chic with modern simplicity.  The cafe serves humorously-named sandwiches like “Cowboy Hotpants”, “French Kiss”, “Awesome Pig” and “Smoky Virgin”.   Combined with red cabbage + alfalfa salad and Doritos, the meal is a fulfilling one.  The French Kiss Sandwich by the way uses an interesting ingredient, the pig’s tongue.  Expect RM 20 – RM 35 per person for one food and one drink.

Whether you are Ipoh-mali or visiting Ipoh on a day trip, you don’t have to go all over town, looking for your favorite hawker food.  Eating hawker food has just gotten savvy, speedy and fashionable at Nam Heong food court .  It houses popular hawker food stalls under one roof, including Stadium Stall 18 Fried Koay Teow, “Pak Kong” (White House) Chicken Rice, Dong Gu Teng curry noodles and of course the famous dim sum and white coffee from Nam Heong itself.  Food served here is a tad more expensive than the original store, but that’s ok because  speedy ordering with a tablet, sleek interior and air conditioning compensate for that. Expect RM 10 – RM 20 per person for one food and one drink.

O Cafe  has captured our hearts with its Hakka cuisine.  Its signboard is strangely placed on the floor, so look out for the big “2” on the façade of the building if you are looking for the cafe.   The cuisine is full of warmth and affection.  The chicken rice wine mee sua is hearty with a generous splash of rice wine; the braised pork has an extra ingredient of wood ear fungus for an extra crunch, while we licked clean the vegetarian curry, including the gravy.  Expect RM 15 – RM25 per person for one food and one drink.

29.  Petit Mary Patisserie

Petit Mary Patisserie @ Ipoh 22 Petit Mary Patisserie @ Ipoh 4
The gorgeous Petit Mary Patisserie has got to be Ipoh’s most beautiful pastry house with a European flair in the color combination of the clouds and the sky.  The charming pastel colors just make you automatically unwind.  The Mont Blanc would be my top recommendation which has an elegant flavor of creamy chestnut and adequately sweet.  During my visit, the patisserie only had pastries and drinks available, but they should have rolled out a more extensive café menu by now. Expect RM 10 – RM25 per person for one food and one drink.

Romantic in white with red floor tiles and sweet floral motifs, blissfulness permeates the air at the Potpourri House Cafe that’s located behind Adonis Bridal House.  The smoked duck spaghetti is scrumptious with an all rounded smoky flavor, topped with shitake mushrooms and cherry tomatoes. The café is also a cosy place for an afternoon high tea session.  Expect RM 25 – RM70 per person for one food and one drink.

31.  PT Grande

PT Grande @ Ipoh 6 PT Grande @ Ipoh 1
Pt Grande has a specialty here – the squid ink pasta, which is uncommon in Ipoh as I’ve only seen this in one other café.  It’s visually appealing to start with, because there is the beautiful contrast of red prawns against a garlic-y, black spaghetti, and when you dig in, it tastes as good as it looks with bouncy prawns in crackling shells.  The other items we’ve tried seemed average though.  Expect RM 20 – RM25 per person for one food and one drink.

32.  Romeo Café

Romeo Cafe Ipoh 4  Romeo Cafe Ipoh 2
Cigarettes and tobacco may be a common thing, but when it comes to artisan tobacco, Romeo Café has a range of fancifully packed tobacco which could be almost mistaken for chocolate.  The café’s focus is on niche and not-your-usual-Malboro-or-Dunhill-tobacco, complemented by coffee and pastries . The coffees and pastries are just so-so, but then again, one drink and one food item only cost about RM 10 or less so I guess that makes it tolerable.  It’s a good place for cigar and pipe enthusiasts but please do remember smoking is not good for health so do visit the cafe at your own discretion.

With Scenic Café’s wooden houses and wooden pavilions displayed prominently in the vast garden, there’s a kampong aura about it that would attract the curious cats.  The vintage, rustic charm continues when you enter the café where old-fashioned colored glass, giant pushcart wheels, rattan ceilings and coconut lamps dominate the scene.  Cafe Scenic’s menu embraces the kampung ideology too with a mixture of Malaysian food like laksa, ayam percik with nasi kerabu, nasi gulai ikan kerapu , and western dishes such as pasta, steak and lamb shanks.  Expect RM 30 – RM 75 per person for one food and one drink.

STG Boutique Cafe @ Ipoh 6 STG Boutique Cafe @ Ipoh 14
Many cafes in Old Town have opted for the vintage look, the shabbier the better. STG Boutique Café has done just the opposite, refurbishing a colonial building to its former glory, yet remaining contemporary and chic.  The pesticide-free Sabah tea here has been reconfigurated in many ways so you can drink it as original, fruity, spiced and more.  The yummylicious rack of lamb is at its supremacy when dabbed with the rosemary sauce.  The Kahlua-laced tiramisu could possible be one of the best in town and the oozing lava cake is simply irresistible. 36.  The Sandwich – Calorie Reckoner

The sandwich - calorie reckoner @ Ipoh 4 The sandwich - calorie reckoner @ Ipoh 5
There’s no kidding about the “calorie reckoner” part because all the sandwiches here are calculated and indicated with the values of calories, carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.  Simply pick the sandwich with the lowest calories and fats if you are on a diet.  The sandwiches here are made of whole wheat bread with mostly basic fillings such as eggs, teriyaki chicken and prawns.  The uncommon snow crab sandwich and the hearty pumpkin soup are two noteworthy dishes to try.  Expect RM 10 – RM 15 per person for one food and one drink.

37.  Tittle Tattle Houz Café

tittle tattle ipoh 9 tittle tattle ipoh 1
Tittle Tattle Houz Café is playful and whimsical with Scrabble tiles, music-sheets-covered aircon, heart-shaped comic strips and butterflies in flight.   Food is served in cute enamelwares here and using uncommon ingredients too, like the guacamole on rice cracker for example.  The ice coffee here also thoughtfully which makes use of unmeltable ice cubes to not dilute the coffee.  Expect Rm 10 – RM 25 per person for one food and one drink.

38.  TWT Café

TWT Cafe Ipoh 3  TWT Cafe Ipoh 5
TWT stands for “Tea, Warmer, Treat” and as you have guessed it, it’s a cafe to go to for meals and tea ! The teas here are uncomplicated, mostly having just one component or a blend of two.  I’ve only tried the “Goat Things” here, which is lamb shoulder and it is satisfactory with no faults.  The zaru soba which is a fusion of Japanese and Western doesn’t look too bad maybe I’ll try that one next time.

Valentino Bridal Cafe @ Ipoh 10

Valentino Bridal Cafe @ Ipoh 2
The unique levitation pre-wedding photography is not the only thing that’s available at Valentino Bridal House.  The glamourous bridal house in seductive red and opulent black also serves exquisite cuisine with contemporary plating.  The two signature drinks “zero-gravity drink” and “fish bowl” would generate some good fun.  If you happen to be doing a bridal shoot there, check out the café afterwards and not before or you might not be able to “levitate”!  Expect Rm 30 – RM 50 per person for one food and one drink.

Section 2 – Cafes from 2013 & Before

1.  Annie Music & Dining Café

Annie Dining & Music Cafe Ipoh 3 Annie Dining & Music Cafe Ipoh 7
The café is almost an hipster café with all the common elements– DIY concept, murals and bicycles though the elements could have been more refined.  Having said that, the food is surprisingly good, both taste and presentation.  Try the mini tortillas that are presented conically, wrapping a spoonful of herbal chicken bolognese with a drizzle of mayonnaise topped with thinly-sliced raw onion.  The café serves alcohol as well and probably turns into a bar at night and hence it has a bit of smoky scent – just in case you are not a big fan of smoke.
Expect Rm 10 – RM 20 per person for one food and one drink.

2.  Beacon Point

Beacon Point @ Ipoh 4Beacon Point @ Ipoh 2
Beacon Point
has been operating in Ipoh for almost 20 years.  It doesn’t look that old except that the vintage broadway posters and movie posters may have revealed its true age.  Signature dishes here include lemak laksa, chicken pie and roast beef.  Going to Beacon Point for dinner is more than eating good food, it’s also about a taste of familiarity, perhaps even a flavor of childhood as you might have eaten at this place since you were young.  .  Expect Rm 15 – RM 35 per person for one food and one drink.

3.  Browns Café

Browns Cafe Ipoh 2 Browns Cafe Ipoh 9
Browns Cafe is located in the clubbing strip of Ipoh Garden East and totally jives with the glittering night scene, while also maintaining a whimsical charm. Browns Cafe’s food is detail oriented even for simple items, for example the mini burgers. Each half of the little buns are buttered, grilled, and each burger has shreds of carrots, cabbages and lettuce, topped with mayonnaise and barbecue sauce.  The patty isn’t a gourmet one but at only RM 10.50, I could not ask for more after such a meticulous ensemble.  Expect Rm 15 – RM 35 per person for one food and one drink.

4.  Friends Café

Friends Cafe @ Ipoh 5Friends Cafe @ Ipoh 11
Friends Café always makes me think of the American TV Sitcom (I’ll be there for youuu ♫♪), and indeed the café was established in that era in 1999.  It’s a sizeable café serving a full range of local and Western food.  The signature dish here is the chicken forest which is a must try as the classic chicken chop is reimagined  with many elements that complement each other.  The chicken chop is pan-fried with both front and back thoroughly browned, cut into bite-size pieces and placed on top of mashed potato mounds.  To create the forest effect, salad leaves and vegetable stir fry of capsicums+mushrooms ornate atop and complete the final ensemble. Expect Rm 15 – RM 60 per person for one food and one drink.

5.  Nadia Sugar & Spice Café

Nadia Sugar & Spice Ipoh 12 Nadia Sugar & Spice Ipoh 1
Nadia Sugar & Spice Café is a chic, halal café that oozes a subtle note of English elegance with a bright interior space, floral motifs, and neatly laid out tables.  Most of the halal cafes in Ipoh tend to have some funk about them, while Nadia Sugar & Spice is a feminine one amongst them.  I like the homely chicken rendang , where the rice had an energetic scent of lemak (coconut) accompanied with a fiery chicken rendang. Cuisine served includes both Malay and Western. Expect Rm 15 – RM 25 per person for one food and one drink.

6.  Purple Moon Valley

Purple Moon Valley @ Ipoh 3 Purple Moon Valley @ Ipoh 11
The lofty cake house is a popular one with its fluffy pastry, yummy cakes and creative fondant cakes made to order.  The baby mouse in diapers is especially cute; the scone is moist and good on its own even without butter, and the happy nuts medley is awesome in sweet caramel sauce. The drinks though didn’t leave any particular impressions though. The Japanese-style mezzanine is quite a gem with its low tables, floral cushions and lots of manga, not to mention that the cake house suddenly seems so big when viewed from this angle.  Expect RM 10 – RM15 per person for one food and one drink.

7.  Take a Break VIP Lounge

Take a Break VIP Ipoh 13 Take a Break VIP Ipoh 4
Assumption is the mother of all scr*w ups – as in the case of this café because I’ve always assumed it’s a (dodgy?) bar until I visited it.  It’s very worldly actually, decorated with posters of iconic places like New York, Paris, San Francisco and more.  The signature dish is white laksa, a gentler version of the red Penang laksa, but still extremely flavorful in its own right with the use of onions, shredded cucumber, mint leaves and secret ingredients.  Expect Rm 15 – RM 25 per person for one food and one drink.

8.  Tammy’s Kitchen

Tammy's Kitchen Ipoh 2 Tammy's Kitchen Ipoh 4
Tammy’s Kitchen could possibly be Ipoh’s best kept secret.  Located amidst the residential area in Ipoh Garden East catering to residents nearby, Tammy’s Kitchen preps food with flawless execution with the use of basic, natural and fresh ingredients, turning them into something extraordinary.   A simple salad instantly outshines others of the same kind with the use of an olive oil based vinaigrette with ground herbs, while a piping hot cheesy salmon marinara would make one thankful for the little things. The quiche too is a popular item with returning patrons.  Expect Rm 20 – RM 35 per person for one food and one drink.
